Senloq builds machine monitoring for UK engineering firms. Two current sensors per machine, a dashboard, and the improvement work that follows from what it shows you. Asset tracking is the other half, for when the question moves from when production stopped to why.

What we think about shop floor data

Four things. You'll be able to tell from them whether we're the sort of outfit you want to deal with.

A green stack light doesn't tell you much

Most shops read utilisation off the lights, or off what the setters write down at the end of a shift. Green can mean cutting. It can also mean powered up and sat waiting on a fixture. The difference is hours a week, every week, and it's invisible from the office.

Measure before you improve

You can't fix a bottleneck you've only estimated. Shops that measure properly for the first time usually land between 40 and 60 percent, well under what they'd have guessed. That gap is the whole job, and everything else is arguing about opinions.

Nobody should have to type anything in for it to work

The clamps read current whether anyone remembers or not. If a setter wants to log why a machine stopped, that's one tap, not a form. The numbers are right either way. Any system that depends on people filling things in stops working the week you get busy.

Data nobody uses is just more paperwork

A dashboard that gets opened twice and forgotten has cost you money, not saved it. If it doesn't change what happens on Monday morning, it isn't earning its subscription. That's why the improvement tracking sits alongside the measurement rather than being sold separately.

Why the improvement work is part of it

Every monitoring supplier gives you a Pareto chart. Very few help you act on it, because acting on it is consulting work and consulting doesn't scale like software.

We think that's the wrong way round. A chart that identifies tooling changeover as your biggest loss is only worth something if someone then reduces the changeover. So changeover reduction, line balancing and standard work are available alongside the system, and every action gets tracked against the downtime cause it targeted with the hours it gave back.

If you have a continuous improvement function already, you won't need that and we won't push it. If you don't, the software on its own will disappoint you.
